I will definitely stick, but it won't feel just right.

Christmas Lunches with family are the best of times on the Gold Coast although it does make me laugh as the normal scene in books are people round a table with winter woolies on and snow in the background a lot different the super-hot weather, shorts, thongs and a burning BBQ.

Have you ever wondered what are the most famous dentures in history?

Well let’s have a little history lesson and take a look at George Washington (First President of the USA) He suffered from poor dental health. In his twenties, he experienced regular toothaches, decay, and tooth loss. These problems were likely due to factors common during Washington's era, including a poorly balanced diet and disease, as well as genetics. Therefore, as a result, he spent his life in frequent pain and employed a variety of tooth cleaners, dental medicines, and dentures.

Some said Washington's false teeth were made of wood. But that is not true. It was made of ivory wired to his remaining real teeth. But when he was inaugurated President in 1789, only one real tooth remained seated. Until he met Dr. John Greenwood, a New York dentist who fashioned him an advanced set of dentures carved out of hippopotamus ivory and has gold wire springs and brass screws holding human teeth. Washington's single tooth as he believed a dentist should "never extract a tooth... when there is a possibility of saving it." Though it was made of precious materials, Washington never seemed contented and comfortable wearing it.

Presently, a few of Washington's false teeth still exist. Parts of a denture made by Greenwood is owned by the New York Academy of Medicine as is the decorative case holding Washington’s last tooth. The only complete set of Washington's dentures that still survives is preserved by the Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens and is made of animal and human teeth, lead, and ivory.

A beautiful, functional and aesthetically pleasing dentures.

Our childhood living on the Gold Coast was usually full of sensational memories, very few worries and woes. It was all about having fun in the sun, running around and occasionally when we did that we might be unlucky enough to have a small injury, usually made all good by a “Kiss it better: a statement and a band aid from Mum”.

Scrapes or bruises were all part of growing up and occasionally? We might even lose a tooth.

But losing a tooth when we were kids was not as bad as it appeared, as when the tears stopped? A sense of excitement would start, yes, the revenue generating “Tooth Fairy” was booked for an appearance.

Yes, Mum or Dad would say, “let’s put that tooth under the pillow” and when you wake up there will be a surprise, a candy or a coin or whatever it is that they think will make you show your toothy grin. Now I don’t know how much inflation has taken over but back in my day there would usually be a shiny 50 cent piece taking the place of the tooth and I would run to the nearest shop to spend it on sugary things that would end up helping the future teeth fall out by themselves.

Sadly, if we fast forward and are passed the two sets of natural teeth we get along the way, the tooth fairy has retired and there are no funds taking the place of a missing tooth, worse still there is no new tooth going to make an appearance.
